In the past decade I have shot in what can be termed "hostile environments". This is by no means the bulk of my work and I am just as happy on an OB or the studio floor.
For clients such as NGO’s interested in shooting in remote or hostile regions: I have filmed in the following regions Afghanistan, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kosovo, Kuwait and Malaysia.
Cameramen and journalists travelling to a war zone are required to take some form of hostile environment training. Two companies in the UK renowned for this type of training are listed below. I recommend anyone considering working outside Europe to undertake some form of hostile environment training. The first aid training given alone is worth it in case you come across an accident on the road or in your own home.
The lectures make you aware of your surroundings, how to react in certain situations and the dangers of being killed by association with the military.
